How to use

What it checks and how it works

The tool follows Google Search Central's article page, opened on 29 Oct 2026. It lists no required property and recommends author (with author.name and author.url), dateModified, datePublished, headline and image. Google says the markup can help it show better title text, images and dates for the article, and that no markup is required to be eligible for features such as Top stories. Google's guidance has details the tool passes on in its hints: keep the headline concise because long titles may be truncated, put only the name in author.name (no job title or honorific), give a time zone with dates, and offer several images in 16x9, 4x3 and 1x1 ratios. The publisher block is optional and is not on Google's recommended list. The tool does not check that the dates, author or headline match the visible page.

Which article type should I use?

Google names Article, NewsArticle and BlogPosting. Use BlogPosting for blog posts and NewsArticle for news reporting.

Are any article properties required?

No. Google lists only recommended properties: author, dateModified, datePublished, headline and image. They help Google show better titles, images and dates.

What should go in author.name?

Only the person's or organization's name. Do not add a job title, an honorific or a prefix such as By.
