Title and Meta Description Length Checker

Count the characters and measure the pixel width of a page title and meta description before you publish.

How to use

What it checks and how it works

Google publishes no character or pixel limit for titles or snippets. Its documentation says a title may be truncated as needed, typically to fit the device width, and that snippets are chosen and cut automatically, so every limit is an estimate. This tool uses the estimates that Screaming Frog publishes for its SEO Spider: titles over 561 pixels and descriptions over 985 pixels, and its default character bands of 30 to 60 for titles and 70 to 155 for descriptions. Width is measured with the canvas measureText method in Arial, at 20 px for titles and 14 px for descriptions. Those two font sizes are Zaher's assumption for the desktop results page, because Google does not document them. Characters are counted as Unicode code points. Limits: the font on a real results page may differ from the one measured here, especially for Arabic, so a width is a guide and not a promise. Google may also rewrite the title or choose another snippet, and the cut-off text shown is an illustration. Where a browser canvas is not available the tool counts characters only.

Does Google have a maximum title length?

Google publishes no number. It says it truncates titles as needed, typically to fit the device width, so width matters more than a character count.

Where do 561 and 985 pixels come from?

They are the estimates Screaming Frog uses in its SEO Spider issues for long titles and descriptions, not figures from Google. You can change both limits in the tool.

Why can a real result differ from this check?

Google chooses the title and snippet it shows and may rewrite them, and its font can differ from the one measured here. Treat the preview as a guide to what may be cut.
