Sitemap Index Generator

List your sitemap files in one sitemap index, for sites that need more than one file.

How to use

What it checks and how it works

A sitemap index is an XML file whose root is sitemapindex and which lists sitemap files in sitemap/loc entries, as defined at sitemaps.org. You need one when a single sitemap would pass 50,000 URLs or 50 MB uncompressed, or when you want to group sitemaps by section. Google's guide says you can submit a single index file instead of every sitemap. The tool writes the namespace, escapes the values and keeps the order you give. It does not open your sitemap files, so check each with the Sitemap Validator.

When do I need a sitemap index?

When one sitemap would exceed 50,000 URLs or 50 MB uncompressed, or when you prefer one file per section such as pages, blog and products.

Can the sitemaps be on a different domain?

They should be on the same site as the index. The tool warns when the hosts differ.

Do I submit each sitemap too?

No. You can submit the index file alone, and Google reads the sitemaps it lists.
