Tashkeel Remover

Strip tashkeel (Arabic diacritics) from vocalized text, and keep the shadda if you want to.

How to use

What it checks and how it works

Tashkeel is the set of combining marks written above and below Arabic letters to show short vowels and other features: fatha, damma, kasra, the three tanwin marks, sukun, shadda, the superscript alef and the Quranic annotation signs. The tool removes the marks in the Unicode Arabic block that are combining marks and leaves the letters, the tatweel and everything else as written. Shadda doubles a consonant and so can change a word's meaning, which is why you can keep it. Removing tashkeel makes the text match unvocalized writing, which is how most Arabic web text is typed.

Does removing tashkeel change the meaning?

It can make a word ambiguous, because the marks show how the word is read. In normal writing the reader works it out from context.

Are Quranic marks removed?

Yes. The Quranic annotation signs in the Arabic block are combining marks, and the tool removes them with the other diacritics.

Does it remove tatweel?

No, this tool leaves tatweel. Use the Arabic Text Normalizer to remove tatweel and fold letter variants.
