Image Compressor

Shrink images to a target file size in your browser, and see how much each one saves.

How to use

What it checks and how it works

The tool uses browser-image-compression, which lowers the image quality step by step until the file is under your target size or it runs out of steps, and can also limit the longest side. You choose the target size in MB, the output format, such as the original, JPEG or WebP, and an optional maximum width or height. It runs on this page without a web worker, so nothing is fetched from a CDN and nothing is uploaded. Limits: a very small target may not be reached. A file that is already well compressed can grow when it is re-encoded, and the tool warns you when a result is not smaller. EXIF data is dropped and a single frame of an animation is kept. Up to 20 files, each up to 25 MB and 40 million pixels. Lossy compression cannot be undone, so keep your originals. The library could not be run in a browser while this tool was written, so test a few of your own files first.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The compression runs in your browser tab and the files never leave your device.

Why did the file not reach my target size?

The library lowers quality in steps and stops when it runs out of steps, so a very small target may be out of reach. Raise the target or reduce the longest side.

Does compressing remove camera data?

Yes, EXIF data is dropped and a single frame of an animated image is kept, so keep the original if you need either.
